ChessBase 11 – Color diagrams online and in documents

Before we jump into today’s ChessBase 11 article, please allow me to mention that USCFSales is closed today (Friday 4/29) because of the tornado activity in Alabama. Our facility was undamaged and all of our staff members are safe, but much of Northern Alabama (including Madison, where our company is located) is presently without electrical power. We apologize for any inconvenience to our friends and customers.

Being as I’m located in Maryland, I’ve still got juice here and am able to offer today’s bit of advice Continue reading

ChessBase 11 – Printing gamescores with color diagrams

I’ve recently been talking to a couple of ChessBase 11 users who are either printing gamescores for their own use or writing/editing outside texts (e.g. chess books). The subject of colored arrows and squares has come up in both cases: “Is it possible to print diagrams containing the graphic commentary?”

The answer is “yes” and here’s how to do it… Continue reading

Capa’s dilemma (An example of using Fritz/Rybka/etc. as a sparring partner)

I was all set to offer another ChessBase 11 tip today, but I’ve decided to hold off on it until next week, as I’ve found an interesting chess position for you to practice against, using your computer chessplaying program. Continue reading

A multi-database search can yield an awful lot of “hits”, so how do you start sifting through all that material? Continue reading

Multi-database searches in ChessBase 11

I’m often asked whether it’s possible to search more than one database at a time in ChessBase 11; I’m happy to report that the answer is an emphatic “YES!” Continue reading

Fritz Opening Trainer: Unorthodox Chess Openings

I’ve decided to blog about something easy (for me, anyway) today. I’ve been sick as a dog for several days, as sick as I’ve been for five or six years (and I’m not fishing for sympathy here – I’m just explaining why this post will be fairly short), and being laid up has given me the chance to finally have a look at a Fritz Opening Trainer DVD I’ve been meaning to peruse: Valeri Lilov’s Unorthodox Chess Openings. Continue reading

Creating Player Dossiers in ChessBase 11

The ChessBase 11 chess database program provides its users with a cornucopia of useful tools for information gathering. Some of these tools actually qualify as a toolbox all on their own – they provide “one-click” access to a bundle of separate (but related) functions which are all carried out in a single operation. The Player Dossier is one such function: it creates separate windows for a player’s White and Black repertoires, as well as a text window which provides fast access to a great deal of information about the player in question. Continue reading
